In the Indian subcontinent, Mastram is one of the most popular writers among youths. However, the fact is that the very existential aspect of a writer named Mastram doesn’t exist. Basically, Mastaram is a code word for Hindi story books (and, also in Urdu, Bangla, and other regional Indian languages) – stories which are written in a very bad taste and which satisfies the manhood of some "morally" illiterates persons. The book never depicts its publication centers; neither the name of the author is disclosed. The book is distributed through roadside vendors and surprisingly has huge market in India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.

These cheap Mastram story books are published on low quality pages with one or two obscene photos. The story revolves around same theme and hence it is not possible to differentiate one story book from others. The price of these books containing three to four stories are also kept at low. Though, the market is big but being illegal the publishers of these books don't give any tax to the Government.

The use of internet and consequent possibility of privacy has certainly abridged the market of these books, but still it is being purchased by those who don’t have access to internet. If you are surprised about the effect of internet on these books, then see around you. It is really a fact, a sad fact indeed, that the customer of Mastram story books are not only persons of lower economic order, but also people belonging to upper social strata loves to read these books.
